Damani McClellan

Principal

Mr. McClellan is a graduate of Roosevelt University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Biology, and holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Saint Xavier University. Before beginning his career in education, he worked in clinical research focused on chronic illnesses.


Mr. McClellan joined St. John de la Salle Catholic Academy in 2019 after teaching second grade in the south suburbs of Chicago. In 2021, he received the Hero of the School Award from the Archdiocese of Chicago and became the school’s full-time Assistant Principal in 2022 and is now the current Principal at SJDLS. In February 2024, he was honored with the Thea Bowman Educational Leadership Award from the Archdiocese of Chicago in recognition of his leadership and commitment to Catholic education.


In addition to his work at St. John de la Salle, Mr. McClellan provides national consultation on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) through the Big Shoulders Fund and developed the SEL curriculum used daily at SJDLS and more than 70 schools across the region.


Outside of school, Mr. McClellan enjoys working out, traveling, listening to music, and camping.
